Canberra was selected as the nation's capital as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney is the largest city and financial hub of Australia, but it is not the capital. Melbourne is a major cultural and historical city in Victoria, but it is not the capital. Brisbane is the capital of the state of Queensland, not the country as a whole.
